Jimmy Creech – 2007 W. W. Finlator Award Recipient

Jimmy Creech will receive our W.W. Finlator Award for his outstanding efforts to ensure full and equal civil rights for the LGBT community. He helped create the Covenant with NC’s Children providing services to children and helped create People of Faith Against the Death Penalty. Creech, an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church until 1999, had his credentials of ordination withdrawn after he celebrated the holy union of two men in Chapel Hill. Creech is Executive Director of Faith in America, Inc., and also manages its philanthropic work.

The Holt Family – 2007 Wake County ACLU Civil Liberties Award Recipient

Joseph H. Holt, Jr. will accept the Wake ACLU Civil Liberties Award for himself and on behalf of his parents, Joseph H. Holt, Sr. and Elwyna H. Holt. The Holts filed a lawsuit fifty years ago, on behalf of their son to help integrate the Raleigh schools. Joe Jr., fourteen in 1957, wanted to attend the all-white Broughton High School. Although the Holts did everything necessary to get him enrolled in Broughton, the Fourth Circuit held that the failure to have Joe Jr. appear before the hostile, white Board of Education meant that he had not exhausted his administrative remedies, therefore the Court should not hear the case.

Representative Deborah Ross – Keynote Speaker

Rep. Ross represents District 38 and is Chair of the House Judiciary 1 Committee. Deborah Ross also served as the Executive/Legal Director of the ACLU-NC for over seven years. She currently is consulting with the Kenan Ethics Institute on a project entitled “Ethics at Work” and also teaches a course at Duke University.
